In a significant development ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have announced South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder as a replacement for the injured English fast bowler Brydon Carse. The move, confirmed on March 6, 2025, comes as a blow to SRH’s initial plans but also introduces a versatile talent to their squad as they gear up for the tournament starting March 22.

Brydon Carse’s Injury Woes

Brydon Carse, a 29-year-old pace-bowling all-rounder from England, was signed by SRH at his base price of INR 1 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction in November 2024. Known for his ability to bowl quick and contribute with the bat, Carse was expected to add depth to SRH’s overseas contingent. However, his participation in the upcoming season was thrown into doubt after he suffered a toe injury during England’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.

The injury, which affected his left toe, first flared up during England’s white-ball tour of India earlier in the year. Despite attempts to manage the issue, it worsened during England’s opening Champions Trophy match against Australia in Lahore, where Carse bowled just seven overs, conceding 69 runs. He was subsequently ruled out of the tournament, with young spinner Rehan Ahmed stepping in as his replacement. With recovery timelines uncertain and the IPL fast approaching, SRH and the IPL governing body confirmed that Carse would miss the 2025 season, prompting the franchise to seek a suitable substitute.

Enter Wiaan Mulder

Stepping into Carse’s shoes is Wiaan Mulder, a 27-year-old South African all-rounder who brings a blend of batting solidity and medium-pace bowling to the SRH squad. Mulder joins the 2016 champions and 2024 runners-up for INR 75 lakh, a cost-effective replacement considering his skill set and recent form. While he went unsold at the IPL 2025 auction despite registering at a base price of INR 75 lakh, his performances in the ongoing Champions Trophy caught the attention of SRH’s management.

Mulder was a standout performer for South Africa in the Champions Trophy, finishing as their joint-highest wicket-taker with six scalps in three matches, including a notable 3/25 against England in Karachi. His ability to swing the ball and contribute in the middle overs, combined with his handy lower-order batting, makes him a like-for-like replacement for Carse, albeit with a slightly different flavor.

Mulder’s Cricketing Pedigree

Born on February 19, 1998, in Gauteng, South Africa, Wiaan Mulder has steadily risen through the ranks of international cricket. He has represented South Africa in 18 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 11 T20Is, amassing 970 runs and picking up 60 wickets across formats. In the T20 arena, Mulder’s domestic record is particularly impressive—2,172 runs at an average of 27.15 and a strike rate of 132.92, alongside 67 wickets in 128 matches. His best bowling figures of 4/14 underline his ability to turn games with the ball, while his 12 T20 fifties showcase his batting credentials.

Although this will be Mulder’s maiden IPL stint, he is no stranger to high-pressure T20 leagues. He has previously featured in South Africa’s SA20 (for Durban’s Super Giants), the now-defunct Mzansi Super League (MSL), and England’s Vitality Blast, gaining valuable experience in diverse conditions. For SRH, Mulder’s versatility—he can bat anywhere from the middle order to the lower order and bowl in the powerplay or middle overs—offers tactical flexibility.

Impact on Sunrisers Hyderabad

SRH’s decision to rope in Mulder comes at a critical juncture as they aim to build on their strong showing in IPL 2024, where they finished as runners-up to Kolkata Knight Riders. Led by Australian pacer Pat Cummins, the team boasts a formidable lineup, including Indian stars like Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, Ishan Kishan, and Mohammad Shami, alongside international heavyweights such as Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head, and Adam Zampa. Mulder’s inclusion strengthens their all-rounder pool, providing cover for both batting and bowling departments.

While Carse’s raw pace and aggressive approach will be missed, Mulder brings a more rounded skill set that aligns with SRH’s dynamic, adaptable style of play. His recent international form suggests he could hit the ground running, potentially forming a potent partnership with Cummins and Harshal Patel in the bowling attack while offering stability in the lower order.

Looking Ahead

SRH kicks off their IPL 2025 campaign against Rajasthan Royals on March 23 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. With a balanced squad and Mulder’s addition, the franchise will be eager to go one step further than last year and lift the trophy. For Mulder, this is a golden opportunity to make his mark on the world’s biggest T20 stage, showcasing his talents to a global audience.

As Brydon Carse focuses on rehabilitation, Wiaan Mulder steps into the spotlight, ready to seize his IPL moment. For SRH fans, the transition from one all-rounder to another brings a mix of disappointment and excitement—a new chapter in their quest for IPL glory begins.
