Ahmedabad, March 25, 2025 – The Narendra Modi Stadium witnessed a breathtaking encounter in Match 5 of the IPL 2025 season as Punjab Kings (PBKS) kicked off their campaign with an 11-run victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) on Tuesday night. Led by a blistering 97 not out from new captain Shreyas Iyer, PBKS showcased their intent under Ricky Ponting’s coaching, posting a formidable 243/5 before holding off a spirited GT chase that ended at 232/5.

PBKS Set the Tone with Explosive Batting

The tone was set early when GT captain Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bowl, hoping to exploit early conditions at the massive Ahmedabad venue.
However, PBKS had other plans. Openers Prabhsimran Singh and debutant Priyansh Arya provided a fiery start, racing to 73/1 in the powerplay. Arya, playing his first IPL match, smashed 47 off just 23 balls, including a flurry of boundaries and sixes, before falling to Kagiso Rabada. His aggressive approach against GT’s pace-heavy attack signaled PBKS’s fearless mindset.

Shreyas Iyer then took center stage, walking in at No. 3 and unleashing a masterclass. The PBKS skipper hammered 97* off 42 balls, striking at an astonishing 230.95, with 9 sixes and 5 fours. His onslaught was complemented by Shashank Singh, who played a crucial cameo of 44* off 16 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes). The duo’s unbroken 81-run stand off just 36 balls in the death overs propelled PBKS to 243/5, a total that looked daunting on a pitch known for favoring batsmen but also offering some late assistance to bowlers.

GT’s bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught. Mohammed Siraj (1/47) and Prasidh Krishna (0/55) were expensive, while Rabada (1/40) and Rashid Khan (1/38) picked up wickets but couldn’t stem the flow of runs. The Titans’ death bowling, in particular, came under scrutiny as PBKS plundered 68 runs in the last four overs.

Gujarat Titans’ Valiant Chase Falls Short

Chasing 244, GT needed a strong start, and their openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan delivered a cautious yet promising 36/0 in four overs. Gill (33 off 21) looked in fine touch before falling to Arshdeep Singh, but Sudharsan (74 off 46) and Jos Buttler (54 off 33) kept the chase alive with a 104-run partnership. Buttler’s aggressive intent and Sudharsan’s anchoring role had GT cruising at 141/2 after 14 overs, needing 103 off the last six.

However, PBKS’s bowlers tightened the screws at the crucial juncture. Marco Jansen dismissed Buttler, and Arshdeep Singh (2/38) struck again to remove Sudharsan, tilting the game back in PBKS’s favor. Sherfane Rutherford (46 off 28) provided late fireworks, smashing 4 fours and 2 sixes, but his dismissal off Jansen in the penultimate over—chopping onto his stumps—effectively sealed GT’s fate. Rahul Tewatia (15* off 8) and Shahrukh Khan (6* off 2) couldn’t pull off the miracle, finishing at 232/5 as PBKS held their nerve.

Vijaykumar Vyshak (0/45) and Arshdeep shone under pressure, with the latter’s strategy of forcing GT batsmen to hit to the off-side proving decisive. GT hit 16 sixes—the most they’ve ever managed in an IPL innings—but it wasn’t enough to overhaul PBKS’s mammoth total.

Key Moments and Standout Performances

  • Shreyas Iyer’s 97:* The PBKS captain announced his arrival with a near-century, narrowly missing out due to Shashank’s boundary-laden finish. His 9 sixes underlined his dominance and earned him the Player of the Match award.
  • Priyansh Arya’s Debut Fireworks: The 23-year-old’s 47 off 23 set the platform and justified PBKS’s Rs 3.8 crore investment from the auction.
  • GT’s Middle-Order Fightback: Sudharsan and Buttler’s partnership kept GT in the hunt, but their dismissals at critical moments swung the momentum.
  • Death Overs Drama: PBKS’s 81-run blitz in the last five overs contrasted with GT’s inability to close out the chase despite Rutherford’s late heroics.

What It Means for Both Teams

For PBKS, this win marks a promising start to the Shreyas Iyer-Ricky Ponting era. Their batting firepower, coupled with disciplined bowling in the clutch, suggests they could finally break their playoff drought since 2014. GT, meanwhile, will rue their bowling lapses and poor death-over execution. With a strong batting lineup and a potent bowling attack on paper, they’ll need to regroup quickly ahead of their next home game against Mumbai Indians on March 28.

The IPL 2025 season is off to a rollicking start, and this high-scoring thriller sets the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating tournament. PBKS will look to build on this momentum when they face Lucknow Super Giants on March 27, while GT will aim to bounce back at home. For now, though, it’s Shreyas Iyer and Punjab Kings who bask in the glory of a hard-fought victory under the Ahmedabad lights.
