Corbin Bosch Steps In as Mumbai Indians’ Replacement for Injured Lizaad Williams Ahead of IPL 2025

Mumbai, March 08, 2025 – With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season just two weeks away, Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time champions, have been dealt an early blow with the news that South African pacer Lizaad Williams has been ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury. In a swift move to bolster their squad, MI have signed another South African talent, Corbin Bosch, as Williams’ replacement, raising intrigue and optimism among fans as the franchise prepares for the season opener on March 22.

Lizaad Williams’ Injury Setback

Lizaad Williams, acquired by MI for ₹75 lakh in the IPL 2025 auction, was expected to play a pivotal role in the team’s pace attack. Known for his ability to generate pace and swing, the 30-year-old right-arm seamer had been a consistent performer in South Africa’s domestic circuit and had earned international caps across formats. However, a lingering knee injury, which previously sidelined him during the SA20 earlier this year, has not healed in time for the IPL. The official IPL statement confirmed, “South African fast bowler Lizaad Williams is ruled out of the upcoming TATA IPL 2025 due to an injury,” leaving MI with no choice but to seek a replacement.
 
Williams’ absence is a significant setback for MI, who were banking on his experience and versatility to complement their star-studded bowling lineup, including Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult. His withdrawal marks the second injury-related replacement for MI this season, following Afghanistan’s Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar being replaced by Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Stepping into Williams’ shoes is Corbin Bosch, a 30-year-old South African all-rounder who brings a blend of pace, wicket-taking ability, and lower-order batting prowess to the table. Bosch, who has yet to make his IPL debut, is no stranger to the MI ecosystem, having been part of their SA20 title-winning squad with MI Cape Town earlier this year. His inclusion in the squad was announced on Saturday, March 08, with MI extending a warm welcome: “Mumbai Indians wish Lizaad a speedy recovery and extend a warm welcome to Corbin into the #OneFamily.”
 
Bosch’s T20 credentials are impressive. In 86 matches, he has claimed 59 wickets at an average of 32.66, with his ability to clock speeds above 140 kmph and deliver pinpoint yorkers in the death overs making him a valuable asset. Beyond his bowling, Bosch has shown flashes of brilliance with the bat, boasting a highest score of 81 and a reputation as a handy lower-order contributor. His all-round skills were on full display recently when he scored an unbeaten 81 against Pakistan in an ODI and picked up 11 wickets in the SA20, underlining his potential to make an impact in high-pressure situations.

A Strategic Upgrade?

While Williams was primarily a specialist bowler, Bosch’s dual skill set could prove to be an upgrade for MI, offering flexibility in team composition. His familiarity with the MI setup through the SA20 gives him an edge in adapting to the franchise’s expectations and strategies. One immediate hurdle for Bosch is a potential scheduling conflict. He is also part of the Peshawar Zalmi squad for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, which overlaps with the IPL’s early stages. On the field, Bosch will need to quickly acclimate to the IPL’s high-octane environment and the demands of bowling on flat Indian tracks. While his express pace and bounce could trouble batsmen early on, his economy rate might come under scrutiny at Wankhede, where small boundaries and dew often favor batsmen.
