Bengaluru, February 22, 2025 – The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 witnessed a pulsating encounter at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium tonight as UP Warriorz clinched their first victory of the season, defeating Delhi Capitals by a commanding 33 runs in Match 8. A sparkling performance from Chinelle Henry and a sensational hat-trick by Grace Harris propelled UPWarriorz to a much-needed win, turning their campaign around after two consecutive losses.

Henry’s Heroics Set the Tone

Opting to bat first after losing the toss, UP Warriorz got off to a shaky start, stumbling to 109/7 by the 15.4-over mark. Delhi Capitals’ bowlers, led by Jess Jonassen’s 4/31 and Marizanne Kapp’s disciplined 2/18, had the Warriorz on the ropes. However, debutant Chinelle Henry walked in and changed the narrative with a breathtaking display of power-hitting.

Henry smashed 62 runs off just 23 balls, including eight towering sixes, to catapult UP Warriorz to a formidable 177/9 in their 20 overs. Her knock, which tied the record for the fastest fifty in WPL history (off 18 balls), was a game-changer. Supported by a steady 24 off 23 from Tahlia McGrath, Henry’s late onslaught gave the Warriorz a total that seemed out of reach earlier in the innings.

Delhi Capitals’ Chase Falters

Chasing 178, Delhi Capitals started strongly with their reliable opening pair of Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma. Lanning, fresh off a match-winning 69 in their previous encounter against UP Warriorz three days ago, looked poised to anchor the innings once again. However, the Warriorz bowlers struck back with intent.

Sophie Ecclestone and Deepti Sharma kept the pressure on, restricting the flow of runs in the middle overs. The turning point came when Grace Harris was introduced into the attack. The Australian all-rounder ripped through Delhi’s batting lineup, finishing with figures of 4/13 in her spell. Her hat-trick in the 19th over – dismissing Arundhati Reddy, Shikha Pandey, and Radha Yadav in successive deliveries – sealed the deal, bundling out Delhi Capitals for 144 in 19 overs.

Annabel Sutherland (28) and Jess Jonassen (19) offered some resistance, but it wasn’t enough to counter UP Warriorz’s disciplined bowling and electric fielding.

Key Performances and Turning Points

  • Chinelle Henry (UP Warriorz): 62 off 23 balls, including 8 sixes, earned her the Player of the Match award for her match-defining contribution.
  • Grace Harris (UP Warriorz): 4/13, including a hat-trick, turned the game decisively in her team’s favor.
  • Jess Jonassen (Delhi Capitals): 4/31 with the ball kept Delhi in the hunt early on, but her 19 with the bat couldn’t salvage the chase.

A Turnaround for UP Warriorz

This victory marked a significant turnaround for Deepti Sharma’s UP Warriorz, who had struggled in the Vadodara leg of the tournament. After losing a nail-biter to Delhi Capitals by seven wickets on February 19, the Warriorz showcased resilience and depth to outclass their opponents in Bengaluru. For Delhi Capitals, the loss dents their momentum after a strong start to the season, leaving them with four points from four matches.

UP Warriorz will look to build on this momentum as the WPL 2025 caravan continues in Bengaluru, while Delhi Capitals will aim to regroup and address their middle-order vulnerabilities. The tournament is heating up, and tonight’s clash proved once again why the WPL remains one of the most exciting platforms in women’s cricket.

For now, the night belongs to UP Warriorz – a team that rose from the ashes, powered by Henry’s fireworks and Harris’s magic, to announce their arrival in WPL 2025.
